Pushkar Packing List

What to pack for Pushkar's sacred lake ghats, desert-edge heat, and the dusty energy of the annual camel fair.

Camel fair at Pushkar, Rajasthan

Why Pushkar packing is different

Pushkar sits at the edge of the Thar Desert, which means hot, dry days and genuinely cold nights for much of the year, with winter (November–February) bringing a particularly sharp day-night swing. The town's sacred lake and its 52 ghats have their own etiquette: modest dress, no shoes, and no photography at the ghats themselves: while the famous Pushkar Camel Fair (usually November) brings dust, crowds, and livestock everywhere underfoot. It's a small town that asks for both reverence and practicality in the same packing list.

Clothing

  • Lightweight, loose cottons for hot desert-edge days
  • A warm layer or jacket for cold desert nights, especially November–February
  • Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for the lake ghats and surrounding temples
  • A scarf or stole for sun protection and quick coverage at religious sites
  • Dust-tolerant, easily washable clothing if visiting during the Camel Fair
  • A light shawl for chilly evenings at outdoor fair grounds or rooftop cafes

Footwear & accessories

  • Easy slip-on sandals: footwear must come off well before the ghats themselves
  • Comfortable closed shoes for walking the dusty fairgrounds during Camel Fair season
  • Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for open desert sun
  • A bandana or cloth mask for dust during the fair or windy afternoons
  • A small crossbody bag, since some ghat areas and fair crowds can get dense
  • Flip-flops for guesthouse use, since sand gets everywhere

Health, documents & tech

  • Sunscreen SPF 30+ and lip balm for dry desert air
  • Rehydration salts: heat and dryness dehydrate faster than humid climates
  • Basic allergy medication for dust, especially during the Camel Fair
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes for ghat-area crowds
  • Cash in small denominations for ghat priests' offerings and fair-season vendors, alongside UPI
  • Power bank, as some guesthouses near the ghats have limited outlets

Pushkar is also one of India's few alcohol-free towns by local regulation: don't expect it to be sold or served within town limits.
