Kerala Packing List

Everything to pack for Kerala's backwaters, monsoon humidity, and temple dress codes: built to pair with Indroam's Kerala itinerary templates.

Wooden boat on the Kerala backwaters

Why Kerala packing is different

Kerala runs hot and humid year-round, with two monsoons: the main southwest monsoon (June–August) and the milder retreating northeast monsoon (October–November). October to March is the easiest window: pleasant, drier, and cooler (roughly 18–30°C): which is also when backwater houseboat trips and Ayurvedic treatments are most comfortable. Add strict dress codes at major temples like Guruvayur and Padmanabha Swamy (men go shirtless in a mundu, women wear a sari) and oil-based Ayurvedic treatments that stain light fabrics, and a generic India packing list won't cover it. This checklist does.

Clothing

  • Lightweight, breathable cotton or linen: Kerala's humidity doesn't let up even in the cooler months
  • Quick-dry fabrics for backwater houseboat stays and humid evenings
  • Old or dark-colored clothing for Ayurvedic oil treatments: the oils stain light fabrics permanently
  • Mundu/dhoti (men) or sari/mundum neriyathum (women) for major temples: often rentable at the entrance, but a light shawl as backup modesty layer is useful at smaller temples without rental stalls
  • Lightweight rain jacket or poncho if visiting during the June–August monsoon
  • Modest swimwear for beach towns (Kovalam, Varkala) and resort pools
  • One smart-casual outfit for resort or houseboat dinners

Footwear & accessories

  • Easy slip-on sandals: footwear comes off at every temple entrance
  • Closed, sturdy walking shoes for Periyar wildlife treks and Munnar tea-plantation trails
  • UV-protection sunglasses
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small dry bag: protects phone and electronics from humidity, monsoon rain, or houseboat-deck splashes

Health, documents & tech

  • DEET-based mosquito repellent: backwater and houseboat stays bring mosquitoes year-round
  • Antihistamine cream for bites
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+: humidity doesn't reduce UV exposure
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes
  • Personal medication and motion-sickness tablets for backwater boat transfers
  • Passport/visa copy, houseboat booking confirmation, and hotel confirmations
  • Portable charger and a universal plug adapter (India: Type C/D/M)
  • Small cash reserve (₹): spice-market stalls and smaller homestays are often cash-preferred
