Why Bandhavgarh packing is different
Safari mornings start before sunrise in an open jeep, which means real cold even though Bandhavgarh's daytime temperatures can climb sharply once the sun is up, especially in the dry summer months. Reserve etiquette also asks for muted, neutral colors rather than bright or white clothing, both to avoid startling wildlife and to stay less visible against the forest. Add dusty, bumpy tracks and strict reserve timing rules, and packing for a tiger safari looks nothing like packing for a city or beach trip.
Clothing
- Neutral, muted-color clothing: khaki, olive, brown, or grey rather than bright colors or white
- Layers for the cold pre-dawn jeep ride, even in warmer months
- A warm jacket or fleece for early morning and late evening drives, especially November–February
- Long sleeves and full-length trousers for sun and dust protection during the drive
- A breathable hat or cap in neutral tones
- A light scarf or buff for dust on unpaved forest tracks
Footwear & accessories
- Closed, comfortable shoes: no sandals, since jeep tracks are dusty and uneven
- Binoculars: the single most useful accessory for a tiger safari
- Sunglasses for bright midday light once the sun is fully up
- A blanket or shawl if your lodge doesn't provide one for the open jeep
- A padded bag for camera gear, since tracks are bumpy
- A small dust mask or bandana for very dry, dusty stretches
Health, documents & tech
- Insect repellent for early morning and dusk drives
- Sunscreen for the midday sun once temperatures rise
- A fully charged camera or phone with a zoom lens, plus spare batteries: charging points can be limited at forest lodges
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes, since dust accumulates fast on safari
- Valid photo ID, required for park entry permits at most reserve gates
- Personal medication, since the nearest larger town and pharmacy can be some distance from forest lodges
Safari timings and zone access are tightly regulated by the forest department and can change seasonally: confirm gate and drive timings with your lodge before arrival.
