Why Andaman packing is different

The Andaman Islands are tropical year-round, with warm temperatures and high humidity, plus a clear monsoon season (roughly May–September) when ferry schedules between islands can be disrupted by rough seas. Because the main draws are coral reefs, beaches, and inter-island boat travel rather than monuments or cities, this list skews toward swim and snorkel gear, reef-safe sun protection, and the kind of light, packable layers that suit ferry transfers between Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep).

Clothing

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for constant tropical heat and humidity
  • Multiple swimwear sets: beach and water activities are the main focus most days
  • A quick-dry rash guard or cover-up for snorkeling and sun protection in the water
  • A light rain jacket or poncho for the May–September monsoon window
  • Breezy daywear for ferry transfers and casual beachside dinners
  • A light sarong or wrap: doubles as a towel, cover-up, or modesty layer

Footwear & accessories

  • Water shoes or sturdy sandals for rocky beach entries and reef walks
  • Flip-flops for general island wear
  • Snorkeling mask if you prefer your own fit over rental gear
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: mineral-based formulas reduce coral bleaching impact
  • A dry bag for phones, cash, and electronics during boat transfers
  • Polarized sunglasses for glare off the water

Health, documents & tech

  • Reef-safe, high-SPF sunscreen, reapplied frequently in tropical sun
  • Aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion
  • Motion-sickness tablets for inter-island ferry crossings
  • Personal medication, since pharmacy options are limited outside Port Blair
  • Photo ID: required for ferry bookings and some island permits
  • Portable charger and a universal plug adapter (India: Type C/D/M): power can be less reliable on smaller islands

Ferry schedules between islands can change with sea conditions, especially in monsoon months, so keep some flexibility in island-hopping plans.
