Why Tamil Nadu temple packing is different
Tamil Nadu's temple towns: Madurai, Thanjavur, Rameswaram, Kanchipuram, and others: hold some of India's largest and most active Hindu temple complexes, many of which enforce strict, specific dress codes (some major temples require men to remove shirts or wear traditional dhotis, and require fully covered legs for everyone) and involve walking barefoot across stone floors that get extremely hot by midday. The climate is tropical and humid year-round, hottest from April to June, with a notable northeast monsoon from October to December that differs from the rest of India's monsoon timing. This list prioritizes modesty, barefoot-floor comfort, and heat management over anything else.
Clothing
- Modest, fully covering clothing: ankle-length bottoms and covered shoulders for most temple entries
- A dhoti or veshti (men) or sari/long skirt (women) for temples with stricter entry codes: often rentable nearby
- Lightweight, breathable cotton clothing for the heat and humidity
- A light rain layer for the October–December northeast monsoon
- A change of clothes if visiting temples with ritual water elements (tanks, abhishekam areas)
- A wide scarf or stole for sun protection and added modesty
Footwear & accessories
- Easy slip-on footwear: shoes come off well before most temple entrances, sometimes at outer gates
- A small towel or cloth to wipe feet before walking on temple stone floors
- Thin socks (some travelers wear these briefly to manage hot stone floors, though many temples don't permit socks inside: check signage)
- Sunglasses and a wide-brim hat for outdoor temple courtyards
- Reusable water bottle
- A small bag that's easy to carry while walking barefoot across large temple complexes
Health, documents & tech
- Sunscreen SPF 50+: courtyards and gopuram towers offer little shade at midday
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes, useful immediately after barefoot temple visits
- Electrolyte sachets for the heat and humidity
- Personal medication for heat-related discomfort
- ID copy and hotel confirmations
- Portable charger and a universal plug adapter (India: Type C/D/M)
Some major temples restrict entry for non-Hindus to certain outer areas: check specific temple rules in advance to avoid disappointment at the gate.
