India e-Visa Processing Time: What to Expect

Most e-Visa applications clear in a few working days: but "a few days" isn't a guarantee. Here's what affects the timeline and how much buffer to build in.

Flying over clouds en route to India

Why this guide

"How long does it take" is one of the most common e-Visa questions, and one of the easiest to answer with a number that turns out to be wrong for your specific case. This page explains the structure of processing time rather than quoting one fixed figure. Independent guide, not affiliated with the Government of India.

What to expect

  • Many applications are processed within a handful of working days when the form and documents are clean
  • Processing time isn't fixed: it varies by nationality, visa type, season, and application accuracy
  • Business and medical e-Visa categories can take longer than the standard e-Tourist Visa
  • The government doesn't publish a guaranteed turnaround time: treat any "guaranteed in X hours" claim from a third-party site as a red flag, not a government commitment

Apply with meaningful buffer before your flight rather than the bare minimum the portal technically allows: processing windows are typical ranges, not promises.

What slows an application down

  • Name, date of birth, or passport number that doesn't exactly match the passport
  • A blurry, cropped, or non-compliant photo or passport scan
  • Peak travel season, when application volume is higher
  • Errors that trigger manual review instead of automated processing

While you wait

  • Don't book non-refundable flights until you have an approved e-Visa in hand
  • Check your email, including spam, for the approval notice
  • If your travel date is close and you haven't heard back, the official portal: not a third-party agent: is the right place to check status
