10-Day Rajasthan Itinerary

Jaipur's pink palaces, Jodhpur's blue city, Jaisalmer's desert dunes, and Udaipur's lake-mirrored towers: the full royal circuit, structured for a luxury pace.

Golden sandstone fort rising from the Jaisalmer desert

The route

Jaipur (3 nights) Jodhpur (2 nights) Jaisalmer (2 nights) Udaipur (3 nights)

This west-to-east arc covers Rajasthan's four marquee cities without backtracking. Fly into Jaipur and out of Udaipur (or back through Jaipur). The Jaisalmer → Udaipur leg is the longest transfer, taking a full driving day or a short flight via Jodhpur.

Best season: October–March. Rajasthan desert nights can drop to 5°C in December–January: pack a warm layer even if days are warm. April–June brings extreme heat above 45°C.

Jaipur: Days 1–3

Day 1

Arrival & the Pink City at dusk

Arrive Jaipur. Check in and orient yourself with an afternoon walk around Hawa Mahal (best photographed from the street café opposite) and the lanes of Johari Bazaar. Head up to Nahargarh Fort at sunset: the panorama over the pink-walled city is the best first impression Rajasthan offers.

Day 2

Amber Fort & the city monuments

Reach Amber Fort by 8 am to beat the coaches. Walk the steep ramp up (or take the jeep), explore Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) and the zenana quarters, and walk the connecting rampart to Jaigarh Fort above. Afternoon: City Palace museum, Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory (a UNESCO site: the instruments still work and the guides explain them well). Evening at leisure in the old city.

Day 3

Jaipur → Jodhpur

Morning train or private car to Jodhpur (~5–6 hrs). Check into a heritage haveli in the old city below Mehrangarh. Afternoon at leisure: wander the blue-painted lanes at your own pace. The blue was traditionally used by Brahmin families and is now city-wide; the colour is most vivid in the narrow streets north of the fort.

Jodhpur: Days 3–5

Day 4

Mehrangarh & the blue city

Mehrangarh Fort is widely considered one of the finest forts in India: allow three hours minimum. The museum inside holds royal palanquins, armour, and miniature paintings. Walk down to Jaswant Thada (the white marble cenotaph) for a quieter, beautiful contrast. Afternoon: rooftop lunch with a fort view, then Sardar Market for textiles, spices, and silver jewellery.

Day 5 morning

Toorji Ka Jhalra & drive to Jaisalmer

Visit Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell at dawn: the recently restored octagonal well is beautifully lit in morning light and usually quiet before 9 am. Then depart for Jaisalmer (~5 hrs). Afternoon: check in to your haveli hotel inside or near the fort, then explore Patwon Ki Haveli (a cluster of five merchant mansions with intricately carved sandstone facades).

Jaisalmer: Days 5–7

Day 6

The Golden Fort & Gadi Sagar

Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few living forts in the world: people still reside inside. Spend the morning walking its lanes, the Jain temples (whose marble carvings rival those of Dilwara in Mount Abu), and the ramparts overlooking the city. Afternoon: Salim Singh Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli. At sunset, head to Gadi Sagar lake: cenotaphs and temples ring the edge, and the light on the water is excellent.

Day 7

Sam Sand Dunes & desert camp

Full-day desert excursion to the Sam Sand Dunes, 42 km from Jaisalmer. Arrive by late afternoon for the golden hour on the dunes. Camel ride at dusk. Overnight at a luxury tented camp with folk music, Rajasthani dinner, and one of India's best stargazing skies: Jaisalmer's remoteness keeps light pollution minimal.

Udaipur: Days 8–10

Day 8

Long transfer & first lake views

Return from camp to Jaisalmer, then make the Jaisalmer → Udaipur transfer: a long drive (~9 hrs via Pali) or a short flight via Jodhpur. Arrive by evening. The first view of Lake Pichola and the City Palace from the ghats is worth staying up for.

Day 9

City Palace, lake & evening culture

Morning boat on Lake Pichola with a stop at Jag Mandir island. City Palace museum (the largest palace complex in Rajasthan: the rooftop views alone are worth the entry). Jagdish Temple, a 17th-century Vishnu temple a short walk from the palace. Evening: Bagore Ki Haveli cultural performance, a 72-room haveli on the lake front with Rajasthani dance shows at 7 pm.

Day 10

Gardens, Fateh Sagar & departure

Saheliyon Ki Bari (the Garden of the Maids of Honour) in the morning: an 18th-century royal garden with fountains and marble elephants, and usually peaceful at opening time. Fateh Sagar lake promenade. Afternoon departure from Udaipur (UDR) or early evening flight back to your home city.

Practical notes

Getting around: Private car with driver for the full circuit (most flexible, especially for luggage). The Jaipur–Jodhpur leg also has good train options (Mandore Express or Intercity). Book trains via IRCTC or a local agent well in advance.

Accommodation: Heritage havelis and palace hotels set the tone: RAAS Jodhpur, Suryagarh or Fort Rajwada in Jaisalmer, Taj Lake Palace or Leela Palace in Udaipur. Book 3–6 months ahead for peak season (November–February).

Pair this with the Rajasthan Packing List: desert heat, cold nights, and palace dress codes all covered.
